John is a graduate of UCD and grew up in Clontarf. He completed his General Practice Training in Dublin, then worked in New Zealand for a period after qualifying.

He has postgraduate qualifications in Paediatrics, Geriatrics and Womens Health and has completed several travel vaccine courses. He is a trainer for the Trinity G.P Training Scheme and is co-author of the ICGP publication "signposts to success".
